From the 1st to the 2nd century Palmyra ruins city that was one of the most important cultural centers of the ancient world.the art and architecture of Palmyra, standing at the crossroads of several civilizations, married Greco-Roman techniques with local traditions and Persian influences. Palmyra city(Roman name) is known as Tadmor city to the Syrians. Tadmor is an Arabic name. Which means ‘’palm tree’’.palmyra or tadmor means the same thing - date palm. The name comes from date palms because of the city is home to some million date palms. It is the only oasis in Syria and maybe it’s the only truly tourist town. It was a trading city and the large trade network linked with china, India, Persia and roman. The roman empire Hadrian in 129 visited the city and was so impressed that he declare that it's a free city renamed it Palmyra Hadrian in 217. In the 6th century, city of Palmyra defenses are rebuilt by emperor Justinian and a few Byzantine churches were built, but most of the city remained in ruins. In 634 Palmyra was taken by the Muslim Arabs under Khalid bin Walled in the name of the first Muslim caliph, Abu Baker. A castle was built on top of a mountain overlooking the oasis. Surrounded by a moat, the castle was accessible only through a drawbridge. In 1089, a major earthquake destroyed what was left of Palmyra.By two English merchants living in Aleppo Palmyra was "rediscovered" in 1678. This is a vast site, but with an easily layout. The largest building in the city the temple of Baal (Bēl) devoted to supreme BABYLONIAN GODs. Which is a 200m square? The great colonnade line with columns was once the city’s main street, which is 1.5km long. The theater, market place and banqueting hall are located southern side of the coloned street, other buildings or temples located on the main street.
